David Patrick Connolly is Professor of Railway Engineering at the School of Civil Engineering, University of Leeds. He is known for his work on railway track dynamics, ground-borne vibration, settlement and geotechnical engineering.

Education[edit]

Connolly received his Masers of Engineering (MEng) Degree in Civil Engineering with Construction Management from The University of Edinburgh, before completing his PhD in Railway Engineering, also at The University of Edinburgh, under the supervision of Prof. Mike Forde.

Career and Research[edit]

After attaining his PhD, he spent four years at Heriot Watt University, as Assistant Professor in Civil Engineering. In 2017 moved to the University of Leeds as Associate Professor, before being appointed as Professor of Railway Engineering in 2022.[1]. Connolly's research is focused on the development and application of novel railway track-ground designs to optimise dynamic performance[2], minimise differential settlement[3] and reduce ground-borne noise and vibration[4]. His work uses a combination of laboratory testing, field instrumentation and software development[5][6][7]

Awards and Honours[edit]

Connolly is a Chartered/Professional Civil Engineer (Institution of Civil Engineers) and also a Fellow of the Permanent Way Institution (FPWI).
