David Paul & the People is an alternative music act formed and fronted by Northern Irish singer songwriter David Paul. The inception of the band traces back to 2007 as vocalist David Paul's former band Beyond, latterly Beyond Jericho, was disbanding. Incidentally the group name the People was chosen by David Paul to denote the transience of the band's members, as personnel and contributors to the musical project fluctuates over time.
The band's initial music has roots within faith based themes driven by lyricist David Paul's own personal spiritual musings but yet the band's debut album release Signs of the Times (2011), according to commentators, sits outside the Contemporary Christian Music bracket as more "experimental" [1] and "'indie'" [2] sounding.
The 'Signs of the Times' debut was released to relatively positive critical acclaim[1][2] and referred to by Christian Today as "one of the most intriguing Christian music projects on the go" however the 'project' nature of the record did not go without criticism with some reviewers[1] [3] noting the fragmented feel to the overall production of the record; a fact that David Paul himself later confessed he struggled with in completing the record over 4 year stint, involving various home and studio recording settings. Despite these calls for refinement and fine tuning the consensus was that there was enough "originality"[1], character[2] and potential[3] to merit the music.
