Early Life
Bishop David C. Strong was born in Charleston, Missouri and grew up in Cairo, Illinois. He was born to the family of the Rev. Elder Melvin & Mrs. Bertha Strong. He is the grandson of Ida Julius and Mattie Julius Brown, who raised him and taught him the spiritual practices of worship, scripture study, and service to the community.
He studied theology at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota, and the Emmaus Institute of the International Christian Community Churches in Atlanta, Georgia. He also completed the University of Washington’s certificate programs in Human Service Management and Nonprofit Management.
He is a fellow of the Rockwood Leadership Institute and the American Leadership Forum. He served as the Executive Director of the AHAT Homecare (formerly known as AIDS Housing Association of Tacoma, Washington) from 2006–2021. He is the former pastor of Sojourner Truth Ministries in Seattle, Washington from 2007–2011 and currently serves as the pastor of Spirit of Christ Catholic Community in Tacoma, Washington since 2012. He served two terms as Presiding Bishop of the Apostolic Catholic Church in America.
Personal Life
Bishop Strong has been a strong advocate of equality for all people, especially racial and sexual minorities. He currently serves on the UW Nonprofit Management Certificate Advisory Board, the BIPOC Committee of the Washington State LGBT Commission, and as treasurer of the Washington State Council of PFLAG (Parents, Families, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays). He served as a founding member of the Religious Coalition for Equality, and served on the Pride Foundation, Multifaith Works, and Covenant House Campus Ministry. Mayor Marilyn Strickland chose him to serve on the City of Tacoma Minimum Wage Taskforce in 2015.
