Davies Hardware
Davies Hardware is a multi-generational hardware store still at its original location at 806 Main Street in the town of Poughkeepsie, New York, about three miles east of the Hudson River. Davies Hardware was founded by W.H. Davies in 1888. He migrated to the U.S. from Monmouthshire, South Wales in 1886, aboard the SS Aurania. In 1888, W.H. Davies purchased the property on Main Street and established a butcher shop which also sold general merchandise. Behind the butcher shop was a livery stable, where horses and carriages could be rented. His oldest daughter, Carlotta, weighing in at no more than 110 pounds, was the butcher. They would bring goats down to the Tulip Street Station on the Hudson River, where sheep would come in from the west, by train. The goats would then herd the sheep up Church Street to the butcher shop.
Earl Davies, one of W.H.'s sons, would later take over the store, maintaining the general supplies and feed.
After his time served in World War II, James Davies, son of Earl, took over and slowly transformed Davies from a general supply and feed store, into a residential and commercial hardware store.
Matthew Davies, son of James, grew up in the hardware store learning the trade and incorporating commercial doors and hardware. Matt continued his family's tradition by maintaining the "customer first" approach and teaching the trade to the newest Davies Hardware owner, Jennifer Davies-Sadowski – the fifth generation, along with Mike Leroy.
