From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Dawn Wells is a Canadian Mi'kmaq filmmaker from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia.

Biography

Wells is from Membertou First Nation in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. She graduated from the Nova Scotia Community College with an Applied Communication Arts diploma in 2003.[1] She worked as a manager at Membertou Radio, where she produced ghost stories.[2] Following her employment at Membertou Radio, she began a YouTube channel called Cape Haunts Till Dawn Film Production in 2017,[3] where she created series such as Haunted Cape Breton and Membertou Ghosts and Hauntings. She subsequently transitioned to television with the Creepy Cape Breton series for Bell Fibe TV.[2]

In 2022, Wells directed and co-wrote the CBC documentary Songs of Unama'ki, a film which explores the traditional music of the Mi'kmaq people.[4] The documentary was the winner of Best Atlantic Short Documentary at the 2023 Atlantic International Film Festival,[4] and won Best Short Film at the 2024 Screen Nova Scotia Awards.[5]

Wells has attributed her interest in supernatural topics to her grandmother, who would tell ghost stories to her and her family when she was a child. She described a childhood interest in television series relating to the supernatural, such as Unsolved Mysteries.[6] Wells has stated that she believes in ghosts, but attempts to approach the topics in her work with skepticism.[2]
