DeAnna Hope Johnson (born December 6, 1995) is an American beauty pageant titleholder from Hazlehurst, Georgia.[1] Johnson is Miss Georgia USA and represented the state at Miss USA 2017.[2]

Prior to that, Johnson was also a contestant on Season 5 and Season 8 of The Voice, eventually finishing in the Top 10 as part of Adam Levine's team.[3]

Early life[edit]

During high school, Johnson sang in church and at rodeos[4]. She also played basketball, volleyball, and softball.[5] Her team at ACA won the Georgia girl's state basketball championship[6] and a national championship[7] in 2013 while making the all-tournament team. Johnson's volleyball team also won a state championship[8] and she was voted MVP of her team in her senior year. And her softball team also won a state title[9] and the NACA national championship in 2012.[10]

Career[edit]

2013: The Voice[edit]

While still in high school, Johnson auditioned on Season 5 of The Voice covering the Grace Potter song Stars. The audition was in the late rounds and only two coaches were available to vote: Blake Shelton and CeeLo Green. Neither turned their chair.

2015: The Voice[edit]

Johnson reauditioned for Season 8 of The Voice. This time all four coaches (Adam Levine, Christina Aguilera, Blake Shelton, Pharrell Williams) turned their chair and she eventually selected Adam Levine as her coach. Before finally being eliminated, Johnson showed her vocal flexibility by singing covers of songs in indie folk, pop, Americana, inspirational, soul, rock, and country styles.

2016: Miss Georgia USA pageant[edit]

In November 2016, Johnson competed in the Miss Georgia USA pageant held in Atlanta, GA. Prior to that, she had been crowned Miss Vidalia Onion Queen[13] and Relay for Life Miss Appling County in 2016.

Her platform cause is anti-trafficking of children[14] and she has cited Ashton Kutcher's work as a role model in the fight against child abuse and exploitation.[15]

2017: Miss USA pageant[edit]

In May 2017, Johnson competed in the preliminary and finals of the Miss USA pageant held in Las Vegas, Nevada[16]

This year the Georgia State House of Representatives and the Georgia Senate added resolutions to recognize DeAnna Johnson's achievements[17][18]

Artistry[edit]

Influences[edit]

Musically, DeAnna has mentioned artists such as Florence and The Machine, the Civil Wars, Loretta Lynn, and Dolly Parton as influences. Her contralto voice, a "blend of strength, fragility"[19] with vibrato, country yodel, and English folk inflections has been compared to Cher ("trademark full-throated Cher-like tone"[20]), Crystal Gayle, Florence Welch, Patsy Cline, Sandy Denny, and Amy Lee.[21][22]

During the Miss USA competition, it was announced that she plans to continue her studies in fashion design.[23] During a snapchat, Johnson has said that she had designed the evening gown that she was planning to wear.[24]
