De Vegetabilibus

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

De Vegetabilibus (Of Plants) is a seven-chapter book written by Albertus Magnus. The book is a single volume from his collection of naturalist writings, including De Mineralibus. This book about botanicals was largely based on the work of Nicholas of Damascus, although he freely criticized that work. The book is a culmination of ideas written in his other books, consolidated by subject. He was the first to distinguish morphological differences between plants, such as the distinction between prickles and thorns. Although groundbreaking at the time, he included many bizarre and false ideas, such as the idea that rye grass grown on good soil would mutate into wheat.[1]The first five chapters were theoretical, while the sixth contained descriptions of individual medicinal and economic species. The seventh was devoted to agriculture and horticulture.[2]
