Dean's of Huntly is a Scottish manufacturer of shortbread, biscuits, cookies and crackers. The company's shortbread is made using a family recipe, and was orginally baked in Helen Dean's family kitchen. In 1992 the company relocated to a purpose built factory, opened by HRH Prince Charles. The company has been based in the Aberdeenshire town of Huntly since 1975.[1] The Dean's of Huntly location includes a cafe, bistro and gift shop, and has become a popular tourist attraction among visitors to the North of Scotland.[2]

Since the company introduced their first shortbread tin in 1992[1] the company have collaborated with artist Steven Brown, photographer Villager Jim, lifestyle brand Herdy and stop-motion comedy franchise Wallace & Gromit to create a range of decorative shortbread tins and other gifts.[1]

History[edit]

The business was founded by Helen Dean in the town of Huntly, Aberdeenshire, in 1975.[1] She originally baked shortbread to raise funds for her husband William's bagpipe band.[citation needed]

In 1992, Dean's moved to a purpose built factory in Huntly. Previously, they were based in a converted grocer's shop since 1985. Before that, Dean's shortbread was made in Helen Dean's kitchen. Production at the factory is now overseen by Helen Dean's son Bill.[3]{{

In 1993, HRH Prince Charles officially opened the factory. In 1999, the gift shop was expanded to deal with increased tourist numbers. The company's first TV advert also ran in 1993.[citation needed]

In 2014, Dean's of Huntly began work with Scottish Chinese Mauritian artist Gayle Chong Kwan, on a project to loot at how waste can be reduced in domestic and commercial food production.[4][better source needed] This was part of Deveron Projects, which aims to connect artists with communities and businesses in Huntly.[citation needed]

Dean's have also worked with other businesses in the North-East to Scotland, to show how carrying out energy audits and improving energy efficiency can save businesses money.[5]

In 2015, Dean's introduced a gluten free range of shortbread. This was also the company's 40th anniversary.[citation needed]

Since 2018, Dean's have been collaborating with artists and lifestyle brands on a range of shortbread tins. This started with Steven Brown Art in 2018, Peak District based photographer Villager Jim in 2020, animation franchise Wallace & Gromit in 2021 and lifestyle brand Herdy in 2022.[citation needed]

Trade magazine Scottish Grocer named Dean's of Huntly as one of the Top 50 food and drink brands in Scotland in 2021, based on sales.[6]

Locations[edit]
