author. He is best known for writing and directing the stop-motion animated feature film Marcel the Shell with Shoes On (2021), starring and co-written by Jenny Slate, based on his viral shorts and New York Times-bestselling children's books of the same name.[1]
In addition to Marcel The Shell With Shoes On, Camp wrote and directed the conceptual documentary Fraud (2016)[2], as well as the short films Smile (2012)[3], Catherine (2013), and David (2016).
Early life[edit]
Camp is from Richmond, Virginia, where he attended Douglas S. Freeman High School. He is a graduate of NYU Tisch School of the Arts.
Career[edit]
In 2010, Fleischer Camp directed, produced, and co-wrote the stop-motion animated short Marcel The Shell With Shoes On starring Jenny Slate as an anthropomorphic gastropod shell. The series garnered viral success and acclaim. In 2011, Camp created Marcel The Shell With Shoes On, Two[4], also co-written by and starring Slate. Camp and Slate wrote two children's book based on the series, Marcel the Shell With Shoes On: Things About Me (2011) and Marcel The Shell: The Most Surprised I've Ever Been (2014)
In 2016 Camp directed David: Story of David, a five-episode series starring Nathan Fielder. IndieWire described it as "yet another gem to [Camp's] self-described banal canon," giving it a Grade: A.[5] Also in 2016, his conceptual documentary Fraud world premiered at Hot Docs to critical acclaim and controversy. During the screening's Q&A session, various arguments broke out amongst audience members.[6] For the film, Camp re-edited an unknown family’s YouTube videos to create an alternate fictional narrative, depicting them as criminal engaged in insurance fraud.[7]
In 2021, Marcel The Shell With Shoes On starring Jenny Slate, Isabella Rossellini, Rosa Salazar, Thomas Mann, Nathan Fielder and Andy Richter debuted at the Telluride Film Festival. Camp played a fictional version of himself in the film as well.[8] The screenplay, written by Camp, Slate and Nick Paley, was based in part on improvised recording sessions[9], which were then storyboarded and adapted into an animatic by Camp and Animation Director Kirsten Lepore. “Ultimately, we sort of backed into an indie version of the Pixar process,” Camp explained[10]. The film was critically acclaimed[11], with The Hollywood Reporter stating "Marcel the Shell With Shoes On is a film with much to offer when it comes to lessons and laughs. It even handles its primary themes about loss, grief and community with humor and grace, an approach that, these days, seems especially hard to find."[12]
