Dean Santangelo
Dean Santangelo (born 23 September 1993) is a Swiss/English goalkeeper for FC Lugano.[1] Born in London, Santangelo began his career with Team Zurich, and joined Reading FC [2] at the age of 15. He played 30 official senior matches on loan. He has been offered professional deals at clubs such as Reading FC, Manchester United, and FC Lugano.
Club Career
Zurich
During one of Santangelo’s Team Zurich matches a Manchester United scout was watching and he was invited to represent them in the Nike U15 International Tournament,[3] where he was discovered by Reading FC scout Steve Shorey. [4]
Reading FC
Santangelo was recruited mid-season. He joined Reading FC in January 2009 at the age of 15. Whilst training with the first team goalkeepers, Santangelo progressed to play for the U18 Academy team at 16 years of age. Santangelo was called up for England U16s/U18s training camp.[5] He was then given the opportunity to play senior football for Bromley FC, Farnborough FC, and Didcot FC on loan. He played 30 official matches on loan.[citation needed]
Santangelo was recalled later that season to play in the FA Youth Cup[6] and to support the First team fight for promotion to the Barclays Premier League. Ahead of the 2012-13 season Santangelo was offered a professional contract. This was turned down to instead join Bundesliga team FC Augsburg.[citation needed]
Bromley
In the summer of 2011, Santangelo joined Bromley FC,[7] where he played 15 matches.[8]
Farnborough
In November 2011, Santangelo signed on a month’s loan to Farnborough FC.[9] Following this, Santangelo joined Didcot FC on loan.[10]
Didcot
Santangelo played 15 matches for Didcot FC.[11]
Augsburg
Santangelo continued his development at FC Augsburg in Germany. There he competed in the U23 team and also trained with the 1st team squad.[12] Shortly thereafter he obtained a contract offer from Manchester United.[13]
Manchester
At Manchester United, it was the intention that Santangelo provide cover for goalkeeper Ben Amos,[citation needed] who joined English Championship side Hull City FC on a season-long (2012-13) loan. Amos’ loan was cut short and Amos[14] returned to Manchester United.[15] Goalkeeping coach Alan Fettis organized a trial for Santangelo with Premier league club Cardiff City in the summer of 2013.[16]
Lugano
Santangelo was given the number one shirt and has been in the squad for all fixtures.[17]
