Dean Wares (born May 1969) is an English titles designer and art director at The Morrison Studio.

Dean's career spans more than 30 years. He has worked with some of the world's most notable film directors, producers and influential designers - which include George Clooney, Tom Ford, Sam Mendes, Tim Burton, Stephen Frears, The Wachowski's and Martin Scorsese. He was honoured by Bafta as a Guru[1] in 2015 and was optioned for an Emmy Award in 2018 for Outstanding Main Title Design for Showtime's TV mini-series Patrick Melrose[2], and again in 2021 for the title sequence on HBO's series The Undoing[3], directed by the Danish film director Susanne Bier, with the title theme song especially performed by Nicole Kidman.

He started out working in advertising, packaging and branding[4]. His time in film and television began with the introduction to Richard Morrison, one of the world's leading designers of feature film title sequences, and at the time shortlisted for ID Magazine's Top 40 of World Creatives. In an interview with Bafta (July 2015) Dean said "Moving over to film and TV was a natural step. Richard and I met many years ago and it was a perfect fit."[1]. Dean became the Creative Partner and Art Director on films such as High Fidelity (2000)[5], Dave A Stewart's Honest (2000) and Jean-Jacques Annaud's Enemy at the Gates (2001)[6]; and the ten minute short Je'taime John Wayne, which was nominated for a 2001 Bafta and winner of Best Short Film at the European Film Awards.

He went on to design on the critically acclaimed The Constant Gardener (2005) by Fernando Meirelles, which won 19 awards including Bafta, Golden Globe and The Academy Awards. Designing titles on cinema releases such as The Golden Compass (2007)[7] and Tim Burton's Sweeney Todd (2007)[8]; nominated for Best Film Graphics in 2008, by the British Animation Awards (BAA). Then again on Tim Burton's films Dark Shadows[9] and Frankenweenie[10] both in 2012. As well as other blockbusters such as Morgan Spurlock's One Direction film This Is Us (2013)[11], the television film drama Muhammad Ali's Greatest Fight (2013)[12] for Stephen Frears, Hossein Amini's The Two Faces of January (2014)[13], and main and end title sequences for The Wachowski's Jupiter Ascending (2015)[14], which included specially hand designed and animated idents for Warner Bros. Village Roadshow and Ratpac.

Since 2015, Dean has continued to design for major studio and independent film productions. Designing the titles on War On Everyone (2016)[15], creative titles development on Tom Ford's Nocturnal Animals (2016)[16], and Dark River (2017)[17] directed by Clio Bernard.

Additionally to main and end title design, Dean has also designed and created the end rollers (end crawls) for many of these films. As well as other films such as the documentary film Ronaldo (2015)[18], Another Mother's Son (2017)[19], The Snowman (2017)[20], and Mary Queen of Scots (2018)[21] directed by Josie Rourke.

2018 onwards has seen Dean's titles work include more and more television title sequences. With titles including Mrs Wilson (2018).[22], The Long Song (2018)[23], Traitors (2019)[24], Flack (2019)[25], Russell T. Davies' A Very English Scandal (2018)[26] and Years and Years (2019)[27], Dublin Murders (2019)[28], Avenue 5 (2020)[29], and Seasons 1, 2 and 3 of Sky Atlantic's Riviera (2017-2020)[30]

Now into 2021, Dean continues to be as prolific as ever.[31] Both he and Richard Morrison at The Morrison Studio completing more than 20 projects in this first half of the year! With film titles including The Mauritanian (2021)[32] directed by Kevin Macdonald; starring Jodie Foster, Creation Stories (2021)[33] for Nick Moran, Augustine Frizzell's The Last Letter from your Lover (2021)[34], and The Electrical Life of Louis Wain (2021)[35] starring Benedict Cumberbatch; directed by Will Sharpe. As well as TV mini-series' titles including The Undoing (2021)[36], Smother (2021)[37] and Too Close (2021)[38] starring Emily Watson.
