Early Years[edit]

Deane Lester was born at Dromana, and spent most of his childhood on stud farms on the Mornington Peninsula. He attended Peninsula Grammar school.

Lester was surrounded by horses from a young age. As well as the stud horses on the farm, Lester had his own Shetland pony.

Lester attended his first race meet when he was eight weeks old, the 1968 Sandown Cup. When Lester was four, he was released from hospital for a day to watch champion thoroughbred Gunsynd win the Cox Plate.

Deane’s father Bob had a passion for breeding horses, but was a painter and decorator by trade. Deane’s mother Sandra trained horses for more than twenty-five years, training over 100 winners including a winner at Flemington. She also trained greyhounds.

Deane immersed himself in sport from a young age, watching and playing several different sports. He was particularly talented at golf.

Media Career[edit]

Deane initially thought he’d like to enter the racing industry as a trainer, but ultimately decided to pursue his love of horses through the media.

He got his first break in 1989, clocking the times of horses at Cranbourne racecourse. This led to a radio spot with 3UZ, where he would briefly discuss the best horses from Cranbourne trackwork.

From there Lester has become one of the established voices on RSN Radio (formerly 3UZ).

In 1996 Lester debuted as a mounting yard analyst for RSN, at Kyneton Cup Day. This led to a role tipping horses from the yard at tracks all around country Victoria. Lester’s success as an analyst earnt him a spot on the Saturday morning panel, in what was his first big break in radio.

Over the past two decades, Lester has established himself as one of Australia’s premier form analysts.[1] Many regard him as the best thoroughbred form judge in Australia.[2][3] He specialises in Victorian racing, and studies the form for at least five different race meetings, for 48 weeks of the year.

Lester is one Australia’s most popular sources for horse racing tips, and has been selling his form to the public from 1995. Today he provides his tips and race analysis through sources such as theGreattipOff.com and RSN.

Deane’s opinions can also be heard on Channel 7’s Saturday television coverage.

Form Analysis[edit]

Lester’s form analysis is an extensive and in-depth process.

He begins by drafting his own speed maps, drawing on his unrivalled knowledge of Victorian horses and jockeys. Lester also factors gear changes into this process. From there, he analysis each horse’s weights and measures, as well as how they handle different track conditions.[4]

That’s before he visualises how the race will pan out, believing that a smooth run in transit is one of the most important factors for a horse’s chances of winning.

Lester also has to factor in jockeys, trainers and the condition of the horse.[5]

It is this hard work and dedication to his work that has positioned him as one of the most respected and revered horse racing form analysts in not only Australia, but the world.

Racing Associations[edit]

Outside of the media, Lester has worked as a racing manager for Gerry Ryan since 2005. He is also a close friend of trainer Lloyd Williams.

Lester was instrumental in Williams’ decision to book Jye McNeil as the jockey of 2020 Melbourne Cup winner Twilight Payment.

Horse Ownership[edit]

Lester has owned numerous horses, including Group 1 winner The Quarterback and Big Pat who ran in the 2003 Melbourne Cup.[4] Lester also breeds his own horses.

Lester names Zipping and Shaftesbury Avenue as among his favourite horses of all time.[4]

Health Issues[edit]

Lester was born with Spina Bifida, a birth defect relating to the spinal cord.

Due to this condition, Lester has had complications with his urinary tract, and when he was eighteen, was the eleventh person in the world to have a Urinary Diversion surgery. It was an eight-hour procedure.

With his walking ability continuing to deteriorate, Lester has been using a mobility scooter since 2002.

Since 2019, Lester has had six separate surgeries on a pressure wound on the back of his leg. He has been forced to spend more than twelve months recovering on his side at home or in hospital.
