Deanna Lynn Wulff as a Ranger in Sequoia National Park

Deanna Lynn Wulff is an environmental activist and grassroots advocate. She works in the central Sierra Nevada. In 2013, she began working to protect the southern Sierra Nevada[1] and, in 2017, she founded Unite the Parks[2], an organization focusing on protecting federal land between Yosemite and Kings Canyon National Parks, which is primarily the Sierra National Forest[3] and a small portion of Bureau of Land Management land, the San Joaquin Gorge.

Early life[edit]

Born in Cupertino, California, she attended Monta Vista High School, where she played soccer and field hockey.[4] At California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, she earned a bachelor's degree in journalism and master's degree in literature.

As a journalist, she covered water policy for Bilingual Weekly, [5] and she was awarded a New American Media and Institue for Journalism and Natural Resources fellowship. She also was a Grassroots Team Member for Stonewear Designs, an outdoor clothing company.

Stories have been published on her work in the Merced Sun Star[6], in the Fresno Bee[7], and 3RNews. National Geographic[8] published a story in 2021 covering her life and the campaign in 2021, and there was a follow-on story in National Parks Traveler[9] In 2022, USA Today also covered her views on climate change in the Sierra Nevada [10].

National Monument Campaign[edit]

At the beginning of the national monument campaign, she went door-to-door, business-to-business to build local support in the gateway area.[11] She formed an advisory board for her organization, primarily from local advocates; soon after, she formed a coalition of non-profit groups. Today, more than 155 businesses and organizations support the effort. In 2017, she officially founded the non-profit Unite the Parks to support the Range of Light National Monument campaign. The San Jose Mercury News endorsed the idea in 2015.[12] The California Democratic Party adopted a resolution in support of the proposal in November 2018.[13] The Democratic National Committee adopted a resolution in support on February 16, 2019.[14] In 2019, 200 scientists signed a support letter endorsing the Range of Light and providing the scientific basis for its creation.

In addition, the Sierra Club put the Range of Light on its wish list to President Biden[15], and soon after, the Coalition to Protect America's National Parks submitted a report and request for protection to the Biden administration[16]. The United Church of Christ also adopted a resolution in support in June 2022.

Related Conservation Work[edit]

In addition, her organization, Unite the Parks, led a lawsuit to save the Pacific fisher[17], and received a grant from the state of California to lead youth from the Central Valley into the Sierra Nevada as part of the Outdoors for All Initiative[18].
