Deanne Stillman is an American author, journalist, and playwright whose works of literary nonfiction are recognized for their deep focus on the landscapes, cultures, and historical tensions of the American West.[1][2]

Career Overview

Stillman’s books often center on place-based stories of war, peace, isolation, and transformation in Western America. Her best-known works include:

Twentynine Palms: A True Story of Murder, Marines, and the Mojave (2001), a Los Angeles Times bestseller and best book of the year, examining the tragic murders of two young women in a desert military town and the social context that shaped their lives.[3][4]

Mustang: The Saga of the Wild Horse in the American West (2008), a celebrated exploration of the mustang’s role in American history, culture, and the struggle for the preservation of wild horses.[5]

Desert Reckoning: A Town Sheriff, a Mojave Hermit, and the Biggest Manhunt in Modern California History (2012), which follows the harrowing manhunt for a hermit after a sheriff’s murder in the Mojave Desert.[6] It won the 2013 Spur Award for Best Western Nonfiction-Contemporary.[7]

Blood Brothers: The Story of the Strange Friendship Between Sitting Bull and Buffalo Bill (2017), a history of the unlikely alliance between two icons of the American West and its impact on the era’s myth and memory.[8]
