On September 11, 2024, the Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori died at the home of his daughter Keiko[1] at the age of 86.[2]
Background
For some years, Fujimori had a number of health issues, including coronary and gastrointestinal problems. Towards the end of his life, he suffered from cancer.[3][4] He was released from prison on humanitarian grounds in December 2023.[5]
Last days
It was reported that he died at the home of his daughter Keiko.[6] She announced it, saying:[7]
After a long battle with cancer, our father, Alberto Fujimori, has just left to meet the Lord. We ask those who loved him to accompany us with a prayer for the eternal rest of his soul.
Reactions
The western media headlined his death as that of a person who was "divisive"[8] and "authoritarian."[9]
Fujimori will receive a state funeral.[10] According to his daughter Keiko, he will lie in state at the Museo de la Nación until the 14th of September and then be buried in Lima at the cemetery Campo Fe in Huachipa.[11] Prime Minister of Perú Gustavo Adrianzén expressed his condolences.[12]
