Death of Fereshteh Ahmadi
Fereshteh Ahmadi, 32, was shot in the chest and killed on October 27, 2022[1] while watching Mahsa Amini protests in Mahabad from a house rooftop. Her death, especially her daughter's reaction on her burial day attracted attentions and sympathy.[2] In the same day in Mahabad, after burial of Esmaeel Mouloudi, three other protesters were shot dead by security forces.[3][4]
Background[edit]
Fereshteh Ahmadi was born in Sardasht in 1990. she was living in Mahabad when shot to death by Islamic Republic security forces. She was the mother of two children.[3]
Burial[edit]
Ahmadi was buried on Friday October 28, 2022 in Hamzeh Abad near Mahabad. The security forces wanted her to be buried the first night, but her family resisted. They, however, did not allow the family to bury her in her hometown Sardasht.[3]
Her daughter, Bavan, image[5] and later video[6][2], crying over Fereshteh's burial site while holding dirt in her hands went viral as a sign of the oppression by Islamic Republic regime. On a temporary stone raised on her tomb, protest slogan "Woman, life, freedom" was written in Kurdish in red.[7]
Cover-up[edit]
Iran West Azerbaijan judiciary head claimed Ahmadi was not in the protests and was shot in her house, also there was no protests going on at her death time, and her death is under investigation.[1][8] This is a common theme in the Mahsa Amini protests as Iranian officials have denied many of the protesters' deaths, calling them car accident, suicide, or falling from rooftop.[1] In response, Fereshteh's brother and father released a video[9][10] contradicting the claim. In the video her brother, said "My sister became a martyr with the bullet of Islamic Republic forces on a house rooftop." [11] He denied the claim that there was no protest going on in that area and reiterated that "... there was a big protest gathering at the time".[11]
