Jason Corbett (February 12, 1976 – August 2, 2015) was a 39-year-old Irish man from Limerick, Ireland, beaten to death with a baseball bat by his wife, Molly Corbett, and her father, Thomas Martens, in Davidson County, North Carolina.[1][2]
Background
Corbett lost his first wife to an asthma attack before meeting North Carolinian native, Molly Corbett, in 2008. Jason eventually married Molly in 2011; they moved back to North Carolina later.[3] Molly's father, Thomas Martens, was a former FBI agent who worked in interrogation for 31 years.[4]
Murder
On August 2, 2015, police were called by Thomas Martens, claiming that Jason was abusive to Molly and claiming he just said, "I may have killed him."[5] Jason was hit 10 times with the bat and a brick. Martens claimed it was self-defense. Both were later charged with Second-degree murder, to which they pleaded not guilty.[6]
Trial
On August 9, 2017, both were found guilty on a second-degree murder charge and both were sentenced to a minimum of 20 years.[7][8]
