Death of Netanel Arami

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Netanel Arami (sometimes rendered as Nathaniel, Natanel) was an Israeli construction worker who was murdered when the rappeller's cables from which he was suspended on a construction site in Petach Tikvah, Israel were cut, causing him to fall 11 stories to his death on 16 September 2014. Police originally dismissed claims by the family it was a "terror murder". Two months later, Israeli authorities deemed his death to have been deliberately caused, and said that it was a case of "terrorism".[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8]

Death and controversy[edit]

Netanel Arami was an Israeli construction worker. He fell 11 stories to his death on 16 September 2014, reportedly when the rappeller's cables from which he was suspended on a construction site in Petach Tikvah, Israel, broke. Arami's death was initially reported as a work accident. However, Arami's family and friends, supported by MK Moshe Feiglin, MK Orit Struk, and others, suspected that he had been murdered by co-workers and demanded an investigation.[9][10][11][12] Arami's wife told the press that "“He told me several times that he was afraid that the Arabs at the construction site would try to kill him by cutting the cables.”[13] Public protests and demonstrations were held demanding an investigation.[14]

Those demanding an investigation compared the case with the murder of Shelly Dadon, a young woman whose death was first deemed a criminal act, before demands by her community led authorities to reopen the investigation and, arrest and try her alleged murderer and find the act to be an act of terrorism.[15][16] [17] It was also compared to the deaths of Asher and Yonatan Palmer, killed by Palestinian stone-throwing, but at first considered to have been an accident,[17] and to the murder of Rabbi Moshe Talbi, whose death was at first deemed suicide by the police.[18][17]

The only 3 persons known to have been on the work site at the time Arami fell were 3 Arab workers from Palestinian Authority-controlled territory.[19] At the end of September a gag order was placed on the investigation by Israeli security.[19][20]

The rope from which Arami was suspended as he worked found to have been deliberately cut.[21] According to Haaretz, "police investigators noticed that the cable he was tied to had been deliberately cut and decided to open a murder investigation."[19]

Victim[edit]

Arami was survived by his pregnant wife and two small children. He was the owner of a small company specializing in the use of Abseiling (rapelling) in construction.[10][17][5]

Ruled as "terrorism"[edit]

In late November, it emerged that Shin Bet had arrested three suspects on suspicion that the murder was a nationalistically-motivated crime. The suspects were released for lack of evidence. The investigation is now treating Arami's death as premeditated murder, and his family have been recognized by the Israeli authorities as victims of "terrorism".[22][23][24]

Repercussions[edit]

The Arami murder case is used to argue against permitting Palestinian construction workers from the Gaza Strip and from the Palestinian Authority-controlled areas of the West Bank[25]to enter Israel.[26]

The case has been used by critics of the government to argue that the government has failed to insure security in the face of a wave of violent attacks on Israelis that took place during the summer and fall of 2014.[27]
