On June 28, 2024, Yenifer Berenice Aquino Bridge, a 16-year-old Hispanic national living in Antigua and Barbuda, was found dead at the side of the road.[1]
Background
Born in Santo Domingo, she migrated to Antigua and Barbuda with her mother Yulissa, and three other siblings when she was only 3. They lived in Grays Farm. She attended the Jennings Primary School but became pregnant at 14 years and had to end her education.[2]
Investigations
Yenifer Bridge’s body was discovered at the side of Fig Tree Drive early in the morning by passersby on June 28, 2024.[3]
Police said she was kidnapped and raped and that “there were no physical marks on the body to indicate that she was struck by a blunt object, weapon or knife“.[4] Hours before she was found, her 2-year-old child was picked up by police wandering the streets.[5]
Yenifer Bridge became the 6th homicide victim of the year in Antigua and Barbuda.[6]
Several suspects, including Yenifer’s friends and her boyfriend, were interviewed, but no arrests were made.[7] The government included Scotland Yard to help with investigations. However, nothing was found to lead to her killer.[8]
Public reaction
The Hispanic community called for justice for Bridge. They marched the streets to demand better results.[9]
Residents also asked why the case gone cold.[10] Yenifer’s mother blamed the police for the slow pace of the investigations.[11]
Funeral
Yenifer Bridge was buried on August 19th, 2024.[12]
