Debashis B. Ghosh is an Indian-born British breast and oncoplastic surgeon. He is a consultant breast surgeon at the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust and UCL Medical School, where he is clinical lead for breast services.[1][2] He sits on a NICE committee on robot-assisted surgery and is certified in cosmetic breast surgery by the Royal College of Surgeons of England.[3][4]

Early life and education

Ghosh grew up in Bombay, India. He graduated MBBS with first-class honours from Grant Medical College, University of Bombay, and completed a Master of Surgery at the Bombay Hospital Institute of Medical Sciences in 1995.[2][5] He moved to the United Kingdom in 1995 and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1998.[5] He was admitted to the General Medical Council specialist register in November 2009.[6] He is dually qualified by the European Board of Surgery in breast surgery and surgical oncology.[1][7]

He undertook early surgical training in hospitals in Coventry and the West Midlands, including a research fellowship at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire with the University of Warwick, where he studied the molecular biology of colorectal cancer.[8] His higher specialist training in breast and oncoplastic surgery was completed in the Leicester deanery, including University Hospitals of Leicester, Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge and Peterborough City Hospital, followed by a post-CCT fellowship in surgical oncology and oncoplastic surgery at the Royal Free Hospital.[2][5]

Career

After his fellowship Ghosh held a locum consultant post at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham and a consultant post at Noble's Hospital on the Isle of Man, and was a visiting fellow at the Paris Breast Institute.[5] He was appointed consultant breast and oncoplastic surgeon at the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust and UCL Medical School in February 2012, becoming clinical lead for breast services and chair of the breast multidisciplinary team.[1][5]

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Ghosh spoke publicly about a fall in cancer referrals, saying that new-patient numbers in his unit had dropped from 250–350 a week to about 90 during the first lockdown as patients delayed attending hospital.[9] His unit featured in the BBC Two documentary series Hospital.[9]

He has been a spokesperson for the NHS England Be Clear on Cancer campaign.[2][10] In the independent sector he holds appointments at The London Clinic and the Harley Street Clinic, and has been clinical divisional director of surgery at The London Clinic since 2023.[2][11]

Research

Ghosh's early research, conducted during his fellowship at the University of Warwick, examined the role of COX-2 and VEGF in angiogenesis in colorectal cancer.[8] He subsequently published on surgical technique, including a prospective study of prophylactic mesh placement to prevent parastomal hernia.[12]

At the Royal Free he has published on sentinel lymph node imaging and axillary management in breast cancer. In 2017 he and colleagues reported what they described as the first use in the United Kingdom of an intraoperative portable gamma camera for sentinel node biopsy in early breast cancer.[13] Other work has included a predictive model for axillary node involvement using one-step nucleic acid amplification (OSNA),[14] and studies of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on breast cancer management at his unit.[15]

He was among the Royal Free investigators on the TARGIT-A trial of intraoperative radiotherapy,[16] and is principal investigator at the Royal Free site for the NIHR-funded ATNEC trial of axillary management after neoadjuvant chemotherapy.[17][18] More recent work has included dedicated breast PET imaging of indeterminate MRI lesions[19] and a case series of the LYMPHA technique for preventing lymphoedema after axillary clearance.[20] He has co-authored a chapter on breast and oncoplastic surgery in Kirk's General Surgical Operations[21] and one on principles of oncoplastic breast surgery in Textbook of Breast Disease.[22]

Teaching and other roles

Ghosh is a lead trainer at the Royal Free London unit of the national oncoplastic breast surgery interface fellowship run through the Joint Committee on Surgical Training,[23] and was international faculty at ABSICON 2021, the annual conference of the Association of Breast Surgeons of India, in Kolkata.[24] He is a fellow of the European Board of Surgery in breast surgery and in surgical oncology.[7] He is a director at Adamas University, Kolkata, in connection with its planned medical school,[2][25] and in February 2025 the university awarded him an honorary Doctor of Science at its eighth convocation.[26] In 2025 he was named to the expert committee for NICE health technology guidance HTG742 on robot-assisted surgery for soft-tissue procedures.[3]
