Debbie Webster is a fictional character from the British soap opera Coronation Street, portrayed by Sue Devaney. She is the daughter of Bill Webster, and younger sister of Kevin Webster. She made her first on screen appearance on 11 June 1984. Debbie left six months later on 9 January 1985. Devaney returned to the role in 2019 for five episodes, following a 34-year absence. On 28 July 2020, it was announced that Devaney would return again in 2020 on a permanent basis.[1]
Casting and creation
Debbie initially arrived on the street in 1984 but only lasted eight months before being written out. Debbie's exit storyline saw her moving to Southampton with her father Bill Webster (Peter Armitage) and stepmother Elaine Prior (Judy Gridley). [2]
Development
After leaving school with no qualifications, Debbie worked at Jim's Cafe. She dates biker Daz Isherwood, much to her father's consternation. In January 1985, Debbie moves to Southampton with Bill and his new wife, Elaine. Off screen, Debbie trained as a hairdresser. In 2001, Kevin disappears when his then ex-wife Sally was planning to marry Danny Hargreaves and was found staying with Debbie in Southampton. Debbie was mentioned again in December 2009 when Kevin and Bill discuss Sally, now married to Kevin again and having treatment for breast cancer, the same disease that killed their mother Alison and how it affected them as children. The following year, after his daughter Sophie ran away from home with her girlfriend, Sian Powers. Kevin phoned Debbie and asked her if she had heard from Sophie. In September 2011, Debbie phones Rosie and tells her that she has bought a villa in Turkey and invites Kevin to visit and bring his baby son Jack. Kevin goes to visit Debbie in November 2016.
After more than 30 years away from Weatherfield, Debbie makes a return to visit Kevin in October 2019.[3] Within minutes, she and Abi Franklin cross wires until Kevin introduces Debbie as his sister. Debbie informs Kevin that their aunt, Vi has died and she attends the will reading. Debbie reveals that she is the sole beneficiary of their aunt's will and tells Kevin she has inherited £200,000 and plans to give it to him, which results in Kevin nearly choking in shock. Kevin then mulls over the idea. A few days later, Debbie leaves Weatherfield again.
In August 2020, Debbie visits Weatherfield again and reveals that this time, she is staying for a lot longer for work so Kevin lets her stay at No.13.[4] It is later revealed that Debbie is the business partner of Ray Crosby (Mark Frost), a businessman who is disliked by many residents of Weatherfield. It is revealed that Ray is planning on buying all the properties on a certain part of Coronation Street to make way for a new hotel he was developing. Ray had already purchased Kevin’s garage and the Platts’ house. He then used Debbie to persuade the other people owning properties in the way to sell up, and she even set up Tim and Geoff Metcalfe (Ian Bartholemew) to have a huge argument during a garden party, to drive each other out of their homes. During the 60th anniversary week, the residents of Weatherfield discover Ray and Debbie’s plans to destroy the street and everyone, including Kevin, turns on Debbie.[5] Eventually, the development is cancelled after Ray tried to bribe the planning officer to grant him permission to build the hotel. Ray is now on the run from the police being harboured in Debbie’s flat away from Coronation Street. She agrees to help him leave the country and escape the police if he signs all of his businesses over to her. He reluctantly agrees but is then informed by his solicitor that Debbie was actually planning for him to get caught by the police. Ray then disguised himself as a workman repairing windows that were smashed at the Viaduct Bistro, and confronts Debbie. He tells her he knows what she did and then furiously attacks her and locks her in the fridge. Kevin then comes along to save her, but he is then locked in the fridge as well. Days later, they are rescued by Abi who calls an ambulance. Ray is then arrested for his various crimes and both Debbie and Kevin survive. When Debbie returns to the street, she is eventually forgiven by everyone and is now dating Ronnie Bailey (Vinta Morgan).
