Deborah Ann Turner (MD, JD, born 1950) is the 20th and current president of the League of Women Voters of the United States (LWVUS) and also the chair of the Board of Trustees of the League of Women Voters Education Fund (LWVEF). She was elected board president at the League of Women Voters 54th National Convention in June 2020 and will continue in this position until at least June 2022.[1]

She currently works in Omaha, Nebraska and four other locations and specializes in General surgery, gynecologic oncology and obstetrics and gynecology. Turner is also affiliated with Mercy Medical Center & Children's Hospital Des Moines (Iowa).

Early life and education

She was born in Mason City, Iowa[2] and graduated from Mason City High School in 1969. In 1973 she received a B.S. degree from Iowa State University.[3] Turner was first interested in medicine because her older sister, Delores, was a registered nurse. She later became interested in becoming a doctor when her husband asked why she didn't become a doctor.[4] She went on to earn her M.D. from the University of Iowa in 1978.[3] She was the first African-American certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology in the specialty of Gynecologic Oncology[5]

In 2007[2] she received her J.D. from Drake University

Career

After that, she moved to Texas where she completed her fellowship in Gynecologic Oncology; In this context, she has practiced gynecologic oncology for 35 years by enhancing different programs in plenty of universities. In July 2015 she stopped practicing medicine to become Vice President of International Programs of the Outreach Program. Finally, she traveled to Tanzania many times to participate in medical missions and has worked with different medical centers to help the children. She has served as Associate Medical Director of Planned Parenthood of North Central States since 2016.[6]

Turner was the first African-American woman asked to join a sorority at Iowa State University,[citation needed] and was hired as a Gynecological Oncologist at several universities including the University of Nebraska, the University of Iowa and the Medical College of Wisconsin.[citation needed]

In June 2020 Turner was elected president of the League of Women Voters.[7]

Awards

Turner was nominated a "Local Legend of Medicine" by representative Leonard Boswell.[citation needed]

In 1983 she was named an 'outstanding young woman of America'.[3]

Turner was inducted into the Iowa Women’s Hall of Fame in 2013[8] and received the Gertrude Rush Award from the National Bar Association in 2015.[9] Furthermore, she was awarded the Louise Noun Visionary Women of the year award from Young Women's Resource Center Des Moines in 2018.[10][better source needed]
