Reception[edit]

Tornado Weather (2017)[edit]

The book was well receive by critics. Publishers Weekly introduced the book by saying that Deborah E. Kennedy, "is a fine mimic, inhabiting her characters in such a way that we know them from the inside out."[1] The New York Times wrote, "Kennedy expertly manipulates point of view to reveal the nodes in her complex, interlocking plotlines."[2] In Criminal Element, critic Chris Wolak wrote, "Kennedy’s writing is captivating. She made me laugh. She even made me shed a tear, which I don’t often do when reading. I hung in with this story, I trusted the writer, and although I felt slightly betrayed by the introduction of something along the lines of magical realism toward the end, I kept reading."[3] Outside of critics mentioning Tornado Weather's writing style, most reviews focused on its content. KPC News reviewed the book as one that "underscores Indiana's flaws," mostly focusing on the racial tension and economic difficulties faced by the characters in the book.[4] Said review focused more on the books content of politics, race, and genocide. Kirkus Review, praised the books narrative, plot, and structure, but framed its review with the opening: "Class, race, and natural disaster collide in this first novel."[5]

After its publication, Deborah was named Indiana Authors Award Honoree,[6] and Tornado Weather was nominated for an Edgar Award in Best First Novel.[7] It went on to be listed as recommended reading by Oprah.com[8]

Despite the above average critical response, the popular response ranged from average to positive. After 1,480 reviews, its Goodreads score is 3.27 out of 5.[9] On Amazon, its after 67 reviews its score is 4.1 out of 5.[10] General audience reception averages mixed to positive, but it is typically more negative than the critical response.
