Decentralized Social Networking Protocol
Decentralized Social Networking Protocol (DSNP) is a blockchain-based web protocol that creates a public database for social connections, allowing users to move records of their relationships between social media services. The protocol is intended to allow users to own and control their social graph without the need for privately owned social network providers.[1]
DSNP was developed by Unfinished Labs and made available to the public as open source technology in 2021.[2]
Solution Overview
According to its foundational white paper, DSNP is composed of three major elements. The first is identity, which creates a representation of users. The second is a social graph, which models relationships between user identities. The final element is messaging, which facilitates communication between the users based on their social graph connections.[3]
Governance
DSNP.org is the independent steward of the Decentralized Social Networking Protocol, with the stated mission "to support community development of open source technology and protocols to create a single, universally accessible, and decentralized social graph."[4] The primary activity of DSNP.org is stable and responsible stewardship of the protocol.
Origin
In June 2021, entrepreneur Frank McCourt announced DSNP would be made available for public use through the launch of Project Liberty, an initiative with the state goal "to rebuild the web as an infrastructure owned by the public."[5] Making DSNP public domain as an open source protocol became the foundation of Project Liberty.[6]
