Declaration of Animal Rights

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

The Declaration of Animal Rights was created in May 2011 by the US animal rights organization Our Planet. Theirs Too.,[1] in reaction to, and as a substitute for, previous declarations on the rights and welfare of animals (such as the Universal Declaration for Animal Rights from 1978, and the Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare from 2000),[2][3] which, in its view, have failed to properly demand full rights for nonhuman animals,[4] and the abolition of all forms of animal abuse and killing by humans - as advocated for by the modern animal liberation and vegan movement. It was drafted by Aylam Orian[4] and edited by Orian and Zelda Penzel,[5] both animal rights activists in New York City at the time.

The declaration was publicly proclaimed on June 5, 2011, at the first National Animal Rights Day event in New York City,[6] and since then it is proclaimed again every year at the National Animal Rights Day events around the world.[7] It has been translated to 23 languages,[5] and signed by close to 50,000 people online,[5] in addition to thousands more signing its physical scroll. The physical scroll of the Declaration - made up of the original scroll from May 2011 and countless pieces added to it from around the world over the years - now stretches half a mile long.[7]

Our Planet. Theirs Too.'s intention is to get it adopted by the United Nations with the same status as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, thus enshrining the full and inalienable rights of all animal species in universal law.[7]
