Decriminalize Denton is a nonpartisan political organization that aims to decrease, and eventually eliminate, legal penalties for adult possession of cannabis in the City of Denton through grassroots organizing.[1][2]
History
Officially organizing in 2020, Decriminalize Denton is a group of community organizers, former and current local university students, and drug policy reform advocates in Denton, Texas.
Decriminalize Denton originally started as a campaign launched by the University of North Texas' Students for Sensible Drug Policy chapter and, together, successfully lowered drug penalties on campus via student government.[2]
In recent years, the organization has spent significant time lobbying for minor cannabis policy change through Denton's City Council, but attempts have come up short in work sessions.[3]
In February of 2022, the organization launched its efforts to gather enough petition signatures to place the municipal initiative on the November 2022 ballot.[4]
