Deep Haldar, Author of Blood Island: An Oral History of the Marichjhapi Massacre

Deep Haldar (born on November 6, 1975) is a journalist for two decades, managing newsrooms and writing on issues of development at the intersection of religion, caste and politics. He worked with popular News groups including India Today and Dainik Bhaskar. He also got the Best Editor Award at the 8th Newsmakers’ Achievers Awards 2017 by Afternoon Voice in Mumbai.

Currently, he is Executive Editor with the India Today Group, looking after the India Today website.

Before Deep Haldar joined the India Today Group, he was editor of Dainik Bhaskar Group’s English language broadsheet newspaper DB Post in Bhopal. It became the highest circulated daily in the city with its investigative stories, bold headlines and innovative layout. Along with DB Post, he was also in charge of DNA’s Jaipur and Ahmedabad editions, as these two editions were managed by the Bhaskar Group.

Before DB Post, he had launched another English language newspaper as editor in 2012. Millennium Post has editions in Delhi and Kolkata.

Before Millennium Post, he was Resident Editor of MiD Day’s Delhi edition.

An editor for more than 10 years, he has launched and run broadsheet newspapers, tabloids and news portals across Delhi, Bhopal, Jaipur, Ahmadabad, Kolkata and Mumbai.

Career as a Writer:[edit]

His first book Blood Island: An Oral History of the Marichjhapi Massacre was published last year by Harper Collins and became an overnight bestseller. It got rave reviews from book critics of all major newspapers and portals.

Blood Island recounts the killings of Dalit Hindu refugees by the Left Front government in an island in the Sunderbans during 1978-79. I have traced survivors of that massacre across various states and recounted their nightmares from 40 years ago.

The second edition of Blood Island is launching soon.

Blood Island is also being translated into Hindi, Marathi and Tamil. Shooting for a bi-lingual film on Blood Island will begin in June 2021.

His second book, also with Harper Collins, is titled Bengal 2021: An Election Diary. The book tries to gauge the mood of Bengal before the assembly polls next year through conversations and field trips.

It will be launched in March 2021.
