Deep Technology

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Deep Technologies are unique, differentiated, often protected or hard to reproduce, technological or scientific advances. These technologies are what create new industries, shake up the ones of old and change the world for future generations.

Hello-Tomorrow and Boston Consulting Group extend this definition in their From "Tech to Deep Tech" Report (2017), citing that "Unlike existing digital platforms and apps, future “deep” technologies will advance the technological frontier. Deep Tech innovations are disruptive solutions built around unique, protected or hard-to-reproduce technological or scientific advances. Deep-tech innovations lie at the crossroads of massive shifts in demand led by megatrends (such as global climate change, demographic shifts, resource scarcity, and an aging population) and scientific progress (such as the discovery of the CRISPR-Cas microbial adaptive immune system) and are impacting all industries." http://media-publications.bcg.com/from-tech-to-deep-tech.pdf

Deep Technologies are now a major focus for governments around the world, with the Australian CSIRO establishing Main Sequence Ventures, a fund that invests in early stage deep technology and science, in response to the Australian Government's National Innovation and Science Agenda. http://www.csiro.au/en/Showcase/Innovation-fund

Supporting Deep Technology in Australia has been the long-term focus of technology incubator Cicada Innovations, a program driven incubator for Deep Technology and Science-based startups, owned by four of Australia's leading universities; University of Sydney, University of New South Wales, Australian National University and the University of Technology, Sydney. http://cicadainnovations.com

In Singapore, the government have invested in a department to support Deep Tech Innovation. In November 2017 SGInnovate unveiled its ‘Deep Tech Nexus’ strategy to further strengthen Deep Tech startup ecosystem in Singapore. https://www.sginnovate.com/sites/default/files/Deep%20Tech%20Nexus%20release_FINAL_0.pdf
