Delete your account
Delete your account is an internet meme, a phrase that New York Magazine describes as a "beloved social media insult,"[1] and that is used as a "dismissive rejoinder" that "translates roughly as 'Your tweet or opinion is so bad that you should be immediately disqualified from further participation on the platform.'"[2] A Wall Street Journal writer described the phrase as "the ultimate Twitter insult."[3] The hashtag has been especially popular in the Black Twitter community.[4]
On February 16, 2016, Edward Snowden used the phrase in response to Jeb Bush's tweet "America" with an image of his name engraved onto a handgun.[5][6] Fusion commemorated Twitter's 10th anniversary in March, 2016 by publishing a list of The 10 best ‘delete your account’ tweets of Twitter’s first 10 years.[5]
On June 9, 2016, Hillary Clinton tweeted "Delete your account" in response to a Donald Trump tweet; it has become Clinton's most retweeted tweet of all time.[2][7] On the day of the tweet, the phrase was mentioned over 344 thousand times.[8] Trump responded "How long did it take your staff of 823 people to think that up--and where are your 33,000 emails that you deleted?" The response referenced Clinton's ongoing email controversy.[9][10] PCMagazine flagged Clinton's use of this phrase on twitter "On Thursday June 9, 2016 at 2:27 p.m. ET," as marking the moment when political campaigns began to be "fought using not only the platforms of social media but also its language."[11]
