Delphian School is an independent K-12 school located in rural Oregon. It is a private, coed institution with about 210 students.

Delphian School has a day school program and two boarding options: five-day (going home on the weekend) and full-time (going home only for academic breaks and summer). It accepts day students beginning at age five and boarding students beginning at age twelve. Most students are in grades 8 through 12, although the school does not have traditional grade levels.

Campus

Delphian School sits on a former Jesuit training institution in Yamhill County, Oregon, near the small town of Sheridan. It encompasses 720 acres of rolling farmland, landscaped grounds, athletic fields, and pristine forest with walking trails and areas for quiet reflection.

The school’s classrooms and support facilities are located in a four-story Art Deco building completed in 1933 by the architect firm Poole & McGonigle. The building is one of the best-preserved examples of institutional Art Deco architecture in Oregon.

History

Delphian School opened in the fall of 1976, following the closure of the Jesuit school and an interior renovation. During its inaugural year, it had an estimated enrollment of 60 students. This grew quickly in subsequent school years, to 120 by the 1978-79 school year and over 200 students within a decade.

Delphian School briefly closed in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. During this time, staff were able to offer uninterrupted instruction via free online classes. The school has since resumed normal on-campus operations.

Academics and teaching philosophy

Delphian School’s teaching method is known as the Delphi Curriculum. It follows Study Tech, a set of pedagogical principles developed by the philosopher L. Ron Hubbard. The school had its own publishing imprint, Heron Books, which produced many of the textbooks and other study materials used in coursework.

Whereas most public, charter, and conventional private schools utilize traditional letter grades, report cards, and grade levels, Delphian School follows a mastery-based model that allows students more autonomy during the learning process and more input in curriculum design. Students rise through the school’s academic ranks by demonstrating competence or proficiency in their studies, rather than at arbitrary points in time (i.e., the end of the spring term). Some Delphian School pupils graduate early, as young as age 16.

Delphian School is led by Head of School Trevor Ott and Assistant Head of School Mark Siegel, JD, who currently serves as director of the Oregon Federation of Independent Schools (OFIS).

Athletics

Delphian School participates in the Oregon School Activities Association's Northwest League (2A classification) for about a dozen boys’ and girls’ sports and extracurricular teams.

Accreditation and honors

As an independent nonprofit institution, Delphian School is not funded by any government agency or religious group. It is an accredited member of the Northwest Association of Independent Schools (NWAIS), the Western Boarding Schools Association (WBSA), the Association of Boarding Schools (TABS), and Cognia.
