Democratic 7

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

D7

D7 (Democratic 7) is a proposed intergovernmental political and economic forum of nations including European Union, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Japan, South-Korea and New Zealand by former NATO Secretary General and former Danish PM Anders Fog Rasmussen.[1]

This should be seen as something in direct competition with G7 or as a replacement for D7 members in the worst case scenario.

The point is to have a democratic alternative with strong economic and political power to negative influences of fully grown China or possibly The United States of America with its failing democratic conditions, foreign-policy and alliance failures seen as a short to long term possible threat from basically all other nations. Since US behavior is strongly linked to repeated US Government administration actions, leading European thinkings to looking at long term solutions VS historic long term strategic partnership with US administrations and moving towards European democratic independence.

The long term growth of India is not lost on any of the proposed D7 member nations and Fog likely specifically suggested this to counter all 3 nations and their close allies in case long term strategic partnership with India fails. Also or alternatively, India was excluded due to its shaky democratic platforms compared to suggested D7 members who are all defacto close allies within EU/NATO/UN/WTO and partner programs and agreements.

As with all European thinkers Fog's suggestion should be understood with the wider European voice where EU is simply the key operator, but it is including Ukraine, Moldova and other presumed future members or key partners regionally in the short to medium term being part of the EU club significantly boosting it voice. Noteworthy current non-EU members like Ukraine and partner nations like Norway.

Due to the UK breakup with the EU and ongoing sensitivities including trade agreement negotiations, they are mentioned separately purposefully to other "EU+" or assumed future EU member European democratic nations.

Since reference [1] is an May 2025 interview in Danish it is expanded here with key regional background. Due to Fog's current consulting company international work and his own top level international political background and network, this is likely known in political circles etc. but is not widely publicly discussed yet as of August 2025.

The trial balloon nature of Fog's proposal and/or the closed door nature of particularly international political alliance building could lead to a longer time difference between closed door talks and open international discussion by the potential member stats. Within this group there is likely widely differencing ideas of the proposal's merits or goals due to the immaturity of the destails of the proposal VS strategic alliances in G7, G20, UN etc.
