Denise Johnson (born on 31 July 1963) was an English singer, songwriter and musician. She was best known for providing vocals on Primal Scream's Screamadelica album and for her long association with Manchester band A Certain Ratio, with whom she recorded and performed live on a regular basis. She was also a much-respected guest vocalist, having been featured on releases by New Order, Electronic, the Charlatans, the Pet Shop Boys, Ian Brown, Bernard Butler and Michael Hutchence, among others.

Early Life[edit]

Johnson was born in Manchester on 31 July 1963 and raised in the suburb of Hulme[1] . With a Jamaican mother, Johnston grew up in a household filled with gospel, reggae and ska. She started singing professionally in a covers band in the middle of the eighties, joining soul group Fifth of Heaven later in the decade, but her love for music and singing followed her since childhood.

Career[edit]

She became well-known after appearing on Primal Scream's groundbreaking Screamadelica album, where her vocals were featured prominently on tracks such as "Don't Fight It, Feel It". This triggered invitations to provide vocals on a series of albums throughout the nineties and beyond, including the first two albums by the Bernard Sumner/Johnny Marr project Electronic, several tracks by A Certain Ratio, and Bernard Butler's and Ian Brown's solo debut albums (People Move On and Unfinished Monkey Business, respectively) and New Order's most recent album, 2015's Music Complete.

Death[edit]

Johnson died at home on 27 of July 2020[2]. issued by her family said she had "died suddenly" after an illness[3]. She was 56 years old and had been due to release her debut solo acoustic album in September 2020.
