Denise Silva
Denise Silva (1988) is a Chicanafeminist and femme multimedia artist and curator[1] whose art consists of soft colors and layers. Her most known work is a series of murals she did titled Grandmothers that are displayed around various library walls in Riverside and perfectly encapsulates the type of art she does and the meanings behind them. She uses Indigenous Futurism to honor and remember our Indigenous ancestors who reflect our skin color and our divine femininity, the effects of colonialism, and the hopes for the future of la gente[2]. Her work centers on Indigenism and femininity and takes its audience on a journey back home to its Indigenous roots.
Biography & Early Life
Denise Silva was born in East Los Angeles but grew up in Riverside, California[2]. Silva attended Riverside Community College and went on to graduate from California State University, Los Angeles where she studied design and illustration[2]. Silva decided to first start her blog pearmama.com in 2006 while homeschooling and raising her family in Riverside where she currently resides and creates art from her studio. She states that during these years she began to become involved in the community art spaces in Downtown Riverside. This influenced her to create her blog as a nurturing online space for mothers. Silva expanded her work and began to explore digital art in 2018. Denise likes to share art as a form of spiritual medicine and to uplift the divine feminine; her artwork centers around her spirituality.
