Denitza Bantcheva (born 15 November 1969) is a French writer of Bulgarian origin. She is also a poet and translator.[1]
Education
Bantcheva's interest in writing manifested itself early: she published poems and short stories in Bulgaria from 1981. She has lived in Paris since 1991. She holds a doctorate in modern literature, gives lectures, contributes to various periodicals and translates from several languages.
Career in literature
Her first book, the poetry collection L’Instant sur les ogives, was published in 1996 and received the Prix Claude Sernet in 1997.
She subsequently published four further poetry collections: L’Orée de la joie, Des morceaux d’archipel, Esquisses autour de la déesse couchée and Liens de sel; five novels: L’Amatrice d’effigies, Les Brefs Mémoires de Léonore Sy, La Traversée des Alpes, A la rigueur and Feu de sarments; prose works including Par des chemins détournés and Visions d'elle; and the short-story collection Dessaisissement.
La Traversée des Alpes was nominated for the Prix de Littérature Européenne of the Association des écrivains de langue française (ADELF).[2]
Bantcheva also writes about cinema. In addition to editing numerous books in the CinémAction collection, she has published a monograph on Jean-Pierre Melville, Jean-Pierre Melville : de l’œuvre à l’homme, a critical work covering the filmography of René Clément, a study of Joseph Losey and a monograph devoted to Alain Delon.
She was elected seven times as a member of the literary jury of the Syndicat français de la critique de cinéma et de télévision (SFCC), and chaired the jury in 2010. In 2016 she served on the SFCC jury for the best French and foreign first film and on the documentary jury of the Signes de Nuit Festival.
From 2012 to 2017, she was vice-president of the Académie des Lumières, which awards the Lumières Awards.[3]
She was a member of the jury of the Trophées francophones du cinéma for its first two editions. Since 2015 she has been a member of the board of the Fondation René Clément and chairs its cinema committee. Since December 2019 she has been a member of the editorial committee of the film magazine Positif.[4]
In 2025 she received the Prix Plume d'or, awarded by the Union des journalistes de cinéma and the Association de la presse étrangère, for her contribution to the analysis and knowledge of French and European cinema.
