Denzil Hurley

Denzil Hurley was born in Barbados in 1949. He earned his BFA from the Portland Museum Art School (Oregon) in 1975 and his MFA at Yale University in 1979. He taught drawing and painting at the School of Art + Art History + Design at the University of Washington in Seattle from 1994 to 2017.[1] He passed away on June 22, 2021.[2]

Hurley is generally known as an abstract painter. He also included sculptural elements in his paintings, in particular adding broomsticks, poles, and other found objects that make the paintings resemble protest signs.[3]
