The Department of Urban and Regional Planning (URP) is a part of Jahangirnagar University, Bangladesh.[1] The department started its academic activities on 8 April 2000 in response to the demand for professionals for spatial planning and development.

The field of planning[edit]

The profession of Urban and Regional Planning has grown to encompass the use of land, protection of the environment, economic productivity and the future allocation of physical and social public resources.

The Department of Urban and Regional Planning:

  • enables practicing planners, aspiring planners, decision makers, and interested public to understand urban and regional systems, public * decision making, institutions of planning, and activities of planners;
  • develops and examines theories and methods useful to understanding urban and regional systems, public decision making, institutions of planning and activities of professional planners;
  • uses and applies these theories and methods to issues of importance to communities and professionals.

Eah academic year the department admits on an average 35 students in the undergraduate program (BURP). The department offers a four year undergraduate program named BURP (Bachelor of Urban and Regional Planning)and a one-year graduate program named MURP (Masters in Urban and Regional Planning).
