Deputy Commissioner(DC) Peshawar is office of the head of District Administration in Peshawar District,Pakistan. Deputy Commissioner executes diverse administrative and executive functions for the Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in Peshawar. DC is also the District Magistrate overseeing law and order and security of the district. Deputy Commissioner authorizes and regulates various activities and functions.[1] The Deputy Commissioner is assist by Additional Deputy Commissioner and Assistant Commissioner

History[edit]

District Administration in Pakistan is a legacy of the British Raj. Deputy Commissioner were members of the Indian Civil Service, and were charged with supervising general administration in the district.

Warren Hastings introduced the office of the District Collector in 1772. Sir George Campbell, Lieutenant-Governor of Bengal from 1871-1874, intended “to render the heads of districts no longer the drudges of many departments and masters of none, but in fact the general controlling authority over all departments in each district."

According to estimates Peshawar is 2500 years old city but first comprehensive District Administration was established by Britisher after taking possession of Peshawar in 1848 from Sikh Rulers. Colonel G. Lawrence was the first Deputy Commissioner of Peshawar. He was succeeded by John Nicholson.

At independence in 1947 the old Peshawar District became Peshawar Division, containing the current district of Peshawar. However, under the latest revision of Pakistan's administrative structure, promulgated in 2001, Peshawar was also given the status of a city district.

Currently Riaz Khan Mehsud is Deputy Commissioner of Peshawar. While Irshad Ali Sodhar a PAS officer from Sind is Additional Deputy Commissioner of Peshawar. Altaf Shiekh another officer from PAS group is Assistant Commissioner of district and assisted by 11 Additional Assistant Commissioner for running daily functionalities.

Role of Deputy Commissioner Peshawar[edit]

The deputy commissioner is the executive head of Peshawar District. In his capacity as district magistrate, he has the overall responsibility of law & order. In his office is also vested the authority to collect Land Revenue and is therefore also titled as collector (revenue)and also to control encroachment in the city. He usually belongs to the District Management Group cadre of the Central Super Services of the Pakistan and have other diverse functionalities and powers.
