Derek Boyer is an American musician and the bassist of death metal band Suffocation. Derek Boyer joined the band in 2004 with his first studio debut being on the 2006 self titled fifth album. He also played in Criminal Element which featured fellow Suffocation member and lead guitarist Terrance Hobbs.

Playing style[edit]

Derek Boyer only plays with finger style. He uses a fast 3-finger technique. He also occasionally uses tapping in some songs such as the section a few seconds after Terrance Hobbs' guitar solo in "Dim Veil of Obscurity" from 2023 album Hymns from the Apocrypha. Derek is well known for sometimes playing his bass guitar vertically if it was an upright bass.

Equipment[edit]

Derek Boyer currently uses the Devil's Choice Kreature 5-string bass with a multi-scale fretboard tuned to G# Standard (C# Standard on the 4-string B.C. Rich Warlock he used in the past), using D'Addario strings as well as Ampeg SVT-810 cabinets and various Ampeg heads. He has also used Peavey PVH cabinets and MiniMega heads.
