He later studied instructional design and educational media development in the post graduate program at Harvard Extension School, where he had a teaching fellowship in 2014[2]. He also had a teaching fellowship at Moscow State Pedagogical University in 2016[3].

He taught computer science at Prospect Hill Academy in Cambridge, MA from 2011 to 2013. He served as owner/operator of Mod, a cybercafé and digital learning center in Charlottesville, Virginia[5]. In 2015 Breen started publishing books for teachers and students which explore programming, digital design and digital storytelling[6]. Since then he has done extensive educational charity work across Europe, Asia and Africa, including serving as a special ambassador for EU Code Week[7] and Africa Code Week[8]. Breen's books have been translated into several languages including French, Spanish, Portuguese, German, Italian, Dutch, Hungarian and Chinese[9].

Breen served in the United States Navy from 1989 to 1992. He was stationed on the USS Missouri where he acted as Target Designation Officer during Operation Desert Storm[10].
