Derek Frank is an American musician[1] and composer, known primarily as a bass guitarist.[lower-alpha 1][2][3][4][5][6]
Early life and education
Frank was born and grew up in Upper St. Clair, Pennsylvania, a suburb of Pittsburgh.[1] He attended the Orange High School in Pepper Pike, Ohio,[7] and soon he began playing his first professional gigs, performing in jazz clubs and musical theatre productions around Cleveland. For his senior year, he was admitted into the Interlochen Arts Academy in Interlochen where he graduated in 1991. Then, Frank enrolled at the University of Miami’s Studio Music and Jazz program, and graduated in 1996. In 1997, he moved to Los Angeles and began his professional career.[8]
Career
Frank is known as a bass guitar player, perhaps most notable for his work as a studio musician and touring sideman with various artists and bands since 2002.[9] As a solo artist, Frank released albums under his own name in 2009 and 2020.[10][11]
Among the bands and artists he has performed with: Brian Auger’s Oblivion Express, Siedah Garrett, Alejandra Guzman, Aly & AJ, the Gregg Rollie Band, Dancing With the Stars,[12][13] Mindi Abair, Victoria Justice, The Boneshakers[14], Air Supply from 2016 to 2017, Daniel Powter, Shakira, Gwen Stefani[15], the house band on The Kelly Clarkson Show, and Shania Twain.[16]
In 2012, Frank began teaching as a visiting teacher at the Musicians Institute's College of Contemporary Music.[17]
