Derek Jones (bassist)
Derek Jones is an American bassist and music educator.[1]His most notable work includes performing for the Pixar short “Boundin’,” as well as his work as the electric and stand-up bassist for Cirque du Soleil’s Kà in Las Vegas, Nevada[2]. He has also released two albums through Blue Coast Records titled, Run With Me (2018)[3] and Dusk ‘til Dawn (2019)[4]
Musical Career[edit]
Derek Jones was born in Vallejo, California[5] on May 17, 1969. He started out playing guitar for his high school jazz band[6] and then later for the Generation Gap Big Band. After hearing Jaco Pastorius' debut album Jones transferred over to the bass.[7][8] Jones eventually became a jazz studies major at Sonoma State University. After two semesters he left university to become a full-time musician and began playing with “Los Kimbos 90s.” He continued studying the bass throughout this time until Victor Wooten and Rob Ickes prompted him to move to Nashville, Tennessee in November 1999. In Nashville, Jones became a studio musician and began touring for the likes of Jeff Coffin, Nickel Creek, Jerry Douglas, Grease Factor, Chrystal Gayle, and Peter Mayer. He also recorded bass for the Pixar short “Boundin’” at Ocean Way Studios.[2]
After auditioning and being accepted as the bassist for the production of Kà by Cirque Du Soleil, Jones moved to Las Vegas, Nevada in December 2004 where he now resides. While in Nevada, Jones was also an adjunct faculty of jazz bass at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.[2]
Jones has released two albums under the label Blue Coast Records: Run With Me (2018)[3] and Dusk 'til Dawn (2019)[4]. Jones partnered with producer Cookie Marenco for both albums and recorded them live in Belmont, California at OTR Studios.[9]
