Derek Macara (born 1987) is an American painter based in Provincetown, Massachusetts, known for painting seascapes and coastal scenes.
Life and career
He studied at the Hawthorne School of Art in Provincetown from 1999 to 2001 and attended Provincetown High School from 2001 to 2005. After graduating in 2005, he worked on fishing boats and later began painting full time.[1][2][3]
Macara held his first solo exhibition at The Red Inn Gallery in Provincetown in 2019 and participated in a selected group show at Treadwell Gallery in Provincetown the same year. He donated his painting Victory II for the Provincetown Portuguese Festival and Blessing of the Fleet in 2021.[4][5][6][7]
In 2022, he held a solo exhibition titled A Closer Look at Derek Macara at the Provincetown Arts Society and participated in a selected juried show at the Provincetown Art Association and Museum. In 2024, he held a solo exhibition at the North Shore Arts Association in Gloucester, Massachusetts.[8]
Macara's paintings are oil works depicting seascapes and coastal scenes, with common themes including ocean horizons, boats, lighthouses, and cloud formations.[9][10][11]
