Devamrita Swami is a traveling monk,[1] spiritual guide,[2], and a member of the Governing Body Commission for the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (popularly known the Hare Krishnas) [3][4]

Career[edit]

Devamrita Swami has been a monk since the 1970s.[5] He speaks on topics of desire, love, happiness, living sustainably through spirituality, yoga, meditation,[6] globalism and higher consciousness, while using religious texts such as the Bhagavad Gita. He is involved in the development of cruelty-free farm projects, like the Gita Nagari bhakti-yoga farm in eastern Pennsylvania and Mantra Lounge in central Philadelphia. Devamrita Swami is the author of several books, including Hiding in Unnatural Happiness,[7] Searching for Vedic India,[8] and Perfect Escape.[9]

Early life[edit]

Born in New York City on 16 October, 1950, he had a Christian upbringing and was giving sermons at the Presbyterian Church at age 13. He attended the Lutheran school and other public schools in New York and Philadelphia, including Philadelphia’s Central High School. At 14, he was awarded a scholarship and supplementary expenses for three years at Holderness[citation needed], a private boarding school in New Hampshire. Upon completing his secondary school education, Yale University offered him a scholarship.[citation needed] While an undergraduate, Swami saw interest in the Bhagavad Gita by A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada.[10][11] In 1974, Devamrita Swami became an initiated student of Prabhupada and accepted the renounced order of life in 1982.
