Devika Bhushan is an Indian-American pediatrician, public health professional, mental health activist, and resilience and equity expert. She served as California's Acting Surgeon General in 2022.[1][2][3]
Education[edit]
Bhushan earned a BA with research Honors in Neuroscience and Behavior from Columbia University, graduating Summa Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa.[4] She earned an MD at Harvard Medical School and undertook a general pediatrics residency at the Johns Hopkins Hospital Bloomberg Children’s Center and is Board-certified in General Pediatrics, with an active medical license in California.[3][5][6][7]
Career[edit]
As California’s Acting Surgeon General (2022),[2] Dr. Bhushan served as a key public health spokesperson and advisor to California Governor Gavin Newsom.[8][4] In this role and previously as the Office's inaugural Chief Health Officer (2019-2022), she led policy and practice innovation at a statewide level, co-crafting and launching the $500 million ACEs Aware initiative in California, focused on healing from childhood adversity and enhancing health equity.[9][10][8][4]
Previously, Dr. Bhushan served as a pediatrician on Stanford’s faculty and as a health and gender equity researcher.[8][4][11] Since 2023, she has served as a senior advisor to entities advancing health and equity, including the National Alliance on Mental Illness's national Board of Directors.[8][11] Dr. Bhushan's areas of clinical, policy, and research expertise are health and gender equity; trauma-informed systems; stress, health, and resilience; and mental health.[8][4][11][12] Her work has been published in The Lancet,[13] Pediatrics,[14] The Los Angeles Times,[15] and National Public Radio.[16]
Dr. Bhushan is an award-winning mental health activist.[17][18] She shared her journey with bipolar disorder publicly while serving as California's acting Surgeon General in 2022 to help destigmatize mental illness and promote healing.[15][16][19] "This was a real watershed moment actually, where somebody of that stature... spoke so openly and, well, just very movingly about her experience with the illness," according to Dr. Michael Myers, MD, a psychiatrist who specializes in physician mental health. "This has resonated a lot with the general public, including us in the rest of medicine," he wrote of the impact of this disclosure.[20]
In 2023, Dr. Bhushan launched a podcast to destigmatize mental illness, Spread the light with Dr Devika B[21] and a newsletter focused on evidence-based tools for well-being, Ask Dr Devika B.[22]
Personal life[edit]
Dr. Devika Bhushan grew up in three countries: India, the United States, and the Philippines. She is an immigrant and a first-generation American.[8][4]
She is the daughter of public health experts Indu Bhushan (health economist and inaugural CEO of Ayushman Bharat) and Anjana Bhushan (specialist in gender, equity, and human rights).[3][23][24][25]
Dr. Devika Bhushan is married to entrepreneur Ashish Kundra.[26] They have one child: Rumi Kundra-Bhushan (born 2021).
