Devil's Tree
The Devil's Tree is located along Mountain Road in the Martinsville section of Bridgewater Township, in an open field of a Somerset County park across from a private housing development.
The tree's history is surrounded by superstition, and common theories claim that Bernards Township was one of the central headquarters for the KKK in New Jersey and that the tree was commonly used for lynching African Americans.[1] Other theories claim that a farmer hung himself from the tree after killing his family and that anyone trying to cut the tree down will "come to an untimely end".[2] Other urban legends surrounding the tree mention that anyone close to the tree will get chased by a black Ford pick-up truck that will disappear past a certain point or that anyone who touches the tree will find that their hands have turned black if they try to eat at a restaurant.[1][3]
The Devil's Tree is currently surrounded by a chain fence due to vandalism and people attempting to cut down the tree.[1]
In other media
In 2013 Dread Central announced that director Joshua Petrino would begin work on a feature film based upon the tree.[4]
