Raja Devinder Singh (5 September 1822 – November 1865) was ruler of the princely state of **Nabha** in the Punjab region of the Indian subcontinent. He ascended the throne at the age of 18 after the death of his father, Raja Jaswant Singh, in **1840**. His reign was marked by political turmoil during the First Anglo-Sikh War (1845–1846), after which he was deposed and his younger son was placed on the throne.[1]

Early life

Devinder Singh was born on **5 September 1822** in Nabha, the son of Raja Jaswant Singh, who had governed Nabha since 1783. Little is recorded about his early life prior to accession, but he was educated and prepared for rule in the political environment of the Cis-Sutlej Sikh states under British influence.[1]

Reign

Devinder Singh became Raja of Nabha on **5 October 1840** after the death of his father. At the time, the Cis-Sutlej states, including Nabha, were nominally under the protection of the British East India Company following a treaty arrangement in 1809.[1]

During the **First Anglo-Sikh War (1845–1846)**, Devinder Singh’s government did not actively support the British; he sympathized with the **Lahore Darbar** (the Sikh Empire). Because of this action—or lack of active support—the British authorities punished him after their victory by confiscating **nearly one-quarter of Nabha’s territory** and deposing him from power. He was removed from the state and sent to **Mathura** under a pension of Rs 50,000 per year.[1]

In Devinder Singh’s place, his **minor son, Bharpur Singh**, was installed as ruler of Nabha, with the affairs of the state managed on his behalf due to his age. This marked the beginning of a new phase in Nabha’s history under British supervision.[1]

Later life and death

After being deposed, Devinder Singh lived outside Nabha with a British-granted pension. In **December 1855**, he was moved to **Lahore**, where he lived until his death in **November 1865**. Devinder Singh’s later years were spent away from political power and involved limited engagement in public affairs.[1]

Legacy

Devinder Singh’s reign is notable for its intersection with major political change in Punjab. His deposition following the First Anglo-Sikh War reflects the shifting balance of power from independent Sikh states toward British authority in the mid-19th century. The transition to his son’s rule under British supervision also set the stage for how Nabha would navigate colonial politics in the decades that followed.[1]
