Dgplug

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

dgplug (Durgapur Linux Users Group) is a group of people on the internet who want to learn, share, and teach together different aspects of coding, communication, security, and best practices in general. The members have a mix of age, sex, and people from different parts of the world working in different things and contributing to various upstream projects in FOSS.world. They conduct a summer training program on IRC channel #dgplug on irc.freenode.net server, mentored by people of the group.

DGPlug Summer Training

dgplug began in 2004, with a motive "Learn yourself, Teach others". The team initially consisted of nine people aiming to instruct and help individuals develop their potential and turn out to be upstream contributors. Kushal Das wanted to start some online training where they could reach a maximum number of users; he chose IRC as the place of the training because of bandwidth issues, and today many people have connected to that platform.

History

dgplug summer training started back in 2004 with around 10+ participants in the first year of this training. Mailing lists guidelines, and how to communicate online were important from the beginning; there is a code of conduct which everyone in the group is supposed to follow. Python was the primary language back then, and so they chose to use that in the training too. Contribution is the keyword for this training; whatever they teach, they expect most of the people to learn and contribute afterward.

Present

dgplug will be holding its 11th summer training[1] course in 2018. The training lasts for almost 3 months, and sessions are generally at 19:00 IST (13:00 UTC) onwards. The focus of this year’s training will be on the impact of code in our daily lives and privacy.

Community

Meetups

It is mostly an online gathering of people over IRC, but members of dgplug meet each other at various conferences and meetups whenever they get a chance. Recently, dgplug members in Bangalore and Pune have been meeting up every month.

Mailing List

They have a mailing list where people from across the globe can join in and discuss various things from computers to education. This is one way to be updated if you are not used to IRC. You can join from here.

Newsletter

dgplug issues a monthly newsletter focusing on one particular topic. It also includes recent blog links [2] from the dgplug members and important links decided unanimously by the community. Anyone who is subscribed to the mailing list gets the newsletter.
