Dharmendra Jai Narain, popularly known as DJ Narain, is an eclectic Indian personality known for diverse activities in public outreach & governance, entertainment and performing arts, academics, management, image-brand and public policy communication, arts and culture sector such as music composition, rock band singing and performance, theatre direction, publishing, film studies and production of films, mass communication, advocacy and Indian civil services.

Education and civil services career

Narain studied at Lucknow University and IIT Kanpur, where he was pursuing a PhD in Economics. Starting his career as a lecturer of Monetary Economics, Narain joined the Indian Civil Services in 1990.[1] He has served on several governing boards and held esteemed positions such as Director - Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) where he introduced major instructional and infrastructural reforms, Governing Board of National School of Drama New Delhi, Governing Board of Haryana State University of Film and Arts Rohtak, Executive Council of Indian Institute of Mass Communications -IIMC - New Delhi, Governing Board Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute of India-SRFTI-Kolkata[2] Director General - Films Division,[3] Additional Director General - Media & Communications, Government of India,[4] Editor-in-chief - Sainik Samachar,[5] Director of Communications - 12th South Asian Games,[6] Vice Chairman - 2007 Military World Games.[7]

Music and arts

Narain founded the band Aryans with two other members in 1998.[8] Along with his band and collaborations with other musicians, he has released the following albums:

Aryans are often considered one of the best bands of the late 1990s in India, appealing to a generation that grew up with them. Online sources credit Aryans with some of the most popular pop rock music videos in India, created during the late 1990s and early 2000s. DJ Narain created the theme song "Jeetangay" for the Commonwealth Games Queens Baton Ceremony. Aryans songs have over 200 million views on YouTube, the highest for any original pop rock band in India. Along with Aryans, he has performed in numerous concerts across the country. Notable performances include the DSDS Global Climate Summit, New Delhi 2009, National Games in Guwahati 2007, and various public concerts and campus festivals.

The music video for Ankhon Mein Tera Hi Chehra helped launch the Bollywood actor Shahid Kapoor's career.[9][10]

He also provided music for the film Woodstock Villa.[11]

He served on the jury of various film festivals, including the LA India Film Awards.[12] He has conducted master classes on film sound design and its evolution in Indian cinema history. DJ Narain is a sound designer.

He directed, conceived, and co-wrote two innovative social and community outreach mega theatre productions: "Jamunia ….tasveer badalte bharat ki" (2010) and "Priya Power" (2013).

In 2009, he received the Karmaveer Puraskaar - Artist for change[13] and the "Navratna Honour" from Lucknow University in 2014. He has been described as "perhaps the only person in India who can be dubbed as a Rockstar and civil servant simultaneously".[13]
