Dianne Calvi is an American nonprofit executive and writer. Since 2010 she has been President and CEO of Village Enterprise, a non-profit working in Africa to end extreme poverty.[1]. She is also a member of the board of directors of InterAction, the largest alliance of international NGOs in the United States.
Early Life[edit]
Dianne Calvi grew up in Palos Verdes Estates, California and was a member of National Charity League. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Stanford University in 1984 and a Masters of Business Administration from Bocconi University’s SDA Bocconi School of Management (Milan, Italy) in 1987 on a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship.
Career[edit]
After graduating from Stanford University and Bocconi School of Management, Calvi worked across multiple sectors — including an 11-year stint[2] at Microsoft Corporation — before joining Bring Me A Book in 2004. From 2004 to 2009, Calvi served as the President of Bring Me A Book Foundation, an early literacy nonprofit. While President, she led the organization’s expansion[3] including setting up a franchise in Hong Kong[4].
Village Enterprise[edit]
In 2010, Calvi became the first outside CEO of Village Enterprise. During her tenure, she has led the organization’s expansion across Sub-Saharan Africa, successfully implemented the first development impact bond for poverty alleviation[5], and completed two randomized control trials with positive results[6].
The organization has been recognized for excellence and high impact by Charity Navigator,[7] GuideStar,[8] The Life You Can Save,[9] Founders Pledge,[10] and the Million Lives Collective,[11] and was a finalist for the Druckers Institute Award [12], the Rockefeller Foundation’s 100 Next Century Innovators Award, and the Larsen Lam ICONIQ Impact Award [13] for its Dreams for Refugees program.
She has written articles and op-eds for The Hill,[14] Huffington Post,[15] Center for Effective Philanthropy,[16] Next Billion,[17] and The World Bank,[18] and has been featured in the New York Times, [19] NPR,[20] Essence, [21] Nonprofit Chronicles,[22] and in other international publications. She has been a guest on numerous podcasts and spoken at several universities including Stanford University[23] and Harvard University [24]
Boards[edit]
Since 2018, Calvi has served on the board of directors of InterAction.[25] Previously, she served on the boards of LifeMoves, Wings Learning Center, and Theater Schmeater.
