Dic Ann's Hamburgers, or simply Dic Ann's, is a fast food restaurant chain in the greater Montreal area. There are a total of 11 Dic Ann's locations,[1] with each being independently franchised.[2]

History[edit]

While living in Rochester, New York, Dominick "Dick" Potenza and his wife Ann Collecchia envisioned a restaurant serving an original smash-style burger alongside their signature sauce.[3]

In 1954, after moving to Montreal, the couple opened the first Dic Ann's location on the corner of Cremazie Boulevard and Papineau Avenue. Two years later, the success of this smaller burger shack allowed them to move the original restaurant to larger premises in Montreal North.[3]

The business was franchised in 1981 when a new location was established in Chomedey,[3] leading to a variety of new Dic Ann's establishments across greater Montreal: Anjou (1994), Terrebonne (1995), Saint-Jérôme (1996), Repentigny (2000), Vimont (2001), Longueuil (2004), Notre-Dame-de-Grâce (2006), Saint-Eustache (2008), Sainte-Thérèse (2012), Old Port (2013), Marché Centrale (2013), Pointe-aux-Trembles (2017).[1]

At present[when?] 11 restaurants remain, with the Notre-Dame-de-Grâce,[4] Old Port, and Longueuil franchises having closed.

Menu[edit]

Dic Ann's serves a variety of fast-food staples, such as hamburgers, hot dogs, fries, poutine, and soft drinks.[citation needed]

The chain is most known for its original style of hamburger, marked by thin patties placed between flattened, toasted buns. This staple is usually topped with mustard, relish, onions, and a signature hot sauce, but can be customized with a variety of toppings such as cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, and pepperoni.[5] The burger is served atop a tongue depressor, which patrons usually use to lift the burger from the plate or to skewer its contents together.[6]

Dic Ann's offers a single, consistent serving size for its menu items.[2]

Achievements[edit]

Dic Ann's is also known for completing speed-based fast food challenges, and has a number of self-proclaimed world records. However, these accomplishments are not recognized by Guinness World Records.[citation needed]

The restaurant claims to hold the record for most hamburgers served by an individual in an under hour. The feat was first accomplished in 1987, when a single employee made 1,306 burgers. It was then repeated in 1987, with a new record of 1,542 burgers.[3]

They also claim to have prepared the largest take-out order of all time, containing a total of 800 burgers.[3]

Commercial products[edit]

Dic Ann's has released a line of commercial food products, available at restaurant locations and Metro grocery stores.[citation needed]

In June 2021, their characteristic spicy sauce was made available for purchase in 550 millilitre containers.[7] In August 2022, the chain released a poutine gnocchi as their first frozen meal product.[8]
